Musikforum Schloss, Viktring, Austria – July 20, 1972 captures a live meeting between trumpeter Don Cherry and South African pianist Dollar Brand, now known as Abdullah Ibrahim. Recorded in Austria in 1972, it documents a collaboration between two contemporary giants of jazz, released here in 2023.
Brand is a wonderful pianist in any setting, and he is especially compelling alongside other major voices, which makes this performance a standout. Cherry's open, searching trumpet and Brand's rhythmic, deeply melodic piano come together in an exchange that shows off the improvisational spirit and world-minded curiosity both artists are known for.
