Dick Dale's scorching 1962 debut album Surfers' Choice established surf music as a viable sub-genre within rock and roll and cemented Dale as the undisputed King of the Surf Guitar. Originally released on Deltone Records, the album peaked at #59 on the Billboard chart, while the single "Let's Go Trippin'" reached #60. More significantly, it introduced Dale's revolutionary approach to the electric guitar—utilizing speed, volume, and sonic texture in ways that would permanently alter rock 'n' roll.
Much of the album was recorded live at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, where Dale had a virtual residency, with studio overdubs added later to enhance the sound. This live energy gives the album an extra authenticity that was largely responsible for bringing surfer music to a wider audience. The album spotlights surf classics including "Peppermint Man" and "Surf Beat," showcasing Dale's fierce showmanship and restless inventiveness that remains unmatched by any surf guitarist who followed.
