Four finds Crumbling Ghost, a long-running London collective, returning with a record that sits at a slight tangent to the rest of the doom, stoner, and rock world. The band transposes modern trappings onto tried-and-true folk sounds and passed-down aural traditions, then adds a heavy dose of doom and sludge.
The album draws on the folklore, stories, and daily lives of ordinary people, with tales of love and death, murder and adultery, freedom and oppression. Crumbling Ghost treat these traditional songs like a pulse from the underground, something to dig up when modern life gets its claws in. The result is heavy, atmospheric, and rooted in history.
