Chloe Alexandra Thompson's They Can Never Burn the Stars, released in 2022 on SIGE Records, is a stunning work of spatial electronic music rooted in deep cultural meaning. Inspired by a story shared by the Sicaugu Oyate people with Thompson's family, the album explores the idea that survivance is sacred and sustained through the ever-evolving relationship between knowledge, tradition, and the more-than-human world.
Recorded within Thompson's own spatial array installation during a residency at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, the album's six tracks were captured on a 6.2 speaker array, resulting in an immersive and carefully sculpted sonic experience. The track "Nocturne Voice" makes use of spectral sound processing and spatialization software developed by Tommy Martinez, adding yet another layer of artistic intention to this already richly conceived record. The LP comes with a printed insert and sleeve art by DB Amorin, making it a beautifully presented artifact of adventurous contemporary electronic music.
