Following an eight-year hiatus, Carole King resurfaced in 2001 with LOVE MAKES THE WORLD, a solid collection of songs that find this legendary songsmith's skills and piano playing still sharply honed. Pulling off the mean feat of crafting adult pop that doesn't sound contrived or insipid, King delivers on the harmony-laden "I Don't Know" and the chugging rock of "Monday Without You." Another pleasant surprise is the number of famous guests whose involvement comes off sounding more organic than the typical major-label star turns. k.d. Lang proves to be a fitting duet partner on the lush "An Uncommon Love," Babyface blends in beautifully on "You Can Do Anything," and Wynton Marsalis delivers a smooth trumpet solo on the hook-laden "I Wasn't Gonna Fall In Love."
Longtime fans will also be thrilled to hear King's re-arrangement of her "Oh No Not My Baby," a '60s hit originally penned for Maxine Brown that loses none of its soul thanks to Carole's raspy delivery. LOVE MAKES THE WORLD is a welcome return from a legend who was sorely missed.
