Originally recorded in the summer of 1980 in Fresenhagen, Carambolage is the self-titled debut from the German duo of the same name, a record that quietly carved out its own corner of the post-punk and neue deutsche Welle scene before fading into obscurity. Now reissued by Tapete Records, this long-overlooked gem has found a new generation of listeners, even earning a place on musician Hilary Woods' list of the best things she heard in 2021.
The music on Carambolage blends spare, atmospheric electronics with a raw rock sensibility, delivered with a cool, deadpan charm that feels both playful and unsettling. Sung primarily in German with occasional French flourishes, the album moves through moody urban sketches and wry character studies, creating a sound that is distinctly of its era yet remarkably fresh to modern ears.
