Hip-hop owes props to groups like Camp Lo for keeping it diverse. UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT is the debut album from Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, two unique vocalists from New York's The Bronx. Their music is a throwback to the '70s, when good times were as funky as they were abundant.
The beats on UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, mostly produced by Ski, are not comparable to anything else in current hip-hop, as evidenced by tracks "Black Nostaljack AKA Come On" and "Rockin' It AKA Spanish Harlem" (which both sound exactly like the titles say). "Luchini AKA This Is It" is about the joys of "getting paid," but the horn-heavy sample (from Dynasty's "Adventures In The Land Of Music") and the duo's delivery add enough flavor to distinguish it from the typical "let's-get-money" track.
Camp Lo: Geechi Suede, Cheeba (rap vocals).
Additional personnel includes: Tracey Amos (vocals); Pete Levin (piano); Bill Ware (vibraphone); Joe Quinde (bass); Gabriel Machedo (congas); Trugoy The Dove, Ish a.k.a. Butterfly, Jungle Brown, Bones, Karachi R.A.W., Joe Mendelson (various instruments).
Producers: Ski AKA Joe Chink, Jocko, Ski, Trugoy The Dove, Ill Will.
