Chicago-based artist Tim Rutili returns with Villagers, Califone's ninth studio album released in 2023. Featuring contributions from an ensemble of longtime collaborators including Rachel Blumberg, Brian Deck, Macie Stewart of Finom, and others, the record marks another chapter in one of indie rock's most consistently inventive careers. Califone have long occupied a unique space in alternative music, blending folk, experimental rock, and post-rock into something that resists easy categorization.
Villagers leans toward the mellower end of Califone's catalog, but Rutili's restless creativity is fully intact across its nine tracks. The album weaves together disparate sonic elements — damaged folk textures, atmospheric experimentation, and understated melody — into a cohesive and surprisingly moving whole. It's the kind of record that rewards patience, revealing new details with each listen and demonstrating why Califone remain one of the most quietly essential acts in contemporary independent music.
