Irish composer and double bassist Caimin Gilmore makes a striking debut with BlackGate, released in August 2025 via New Amsterdam Records in collaboration with Dublin. The album is a genre-fluid, instrumental journey featuring renowned cellist Kate Ellis and harpist Lavinia Meijer, weaving together pulsing harp, strings, and a vintage Yamaha DX7 synthesizer into a richly textured sonic world.
Structured as a series of movements and segues, BlackGate captures what Gilmore describes as the rise and fall of lived emotion — rushing, yielding, heavy, and bright — mirroring life's rhythms. Each movement pushes the trio to the far ends of their sonic spectrum, from light bouncing rhythms and meditative harp to screeching bowed strings and ghostly synth echoes, culminating in a lush and deeply immersive closing piece that is comfortable with genre but never confined by it.
