Turnstiles is Billy Joel's fourth studio album, originally released in 1976 on Columbia Records. Recorded after his move from Los Angeles back to New York, it marks a turning point in his career, with a more confident and personal voice than his earlier work.
The songs pair rock-theater flair and Broadway-style drama with sharp storytelling and a classic singer-songwriter sensibility. It includes "New York State of Mind," a wistful ballad that became one of Joel's signature compositions, along with "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" and "Summer, Highland Falls." Together they show his range as a pianist, lyricist, and chronicler of city life.
