Aquakultre's third album 1783 represents a bold artistic leap for Lance Sampson, who assumes the voices of historical characters from Black Nova Scotia's past. Produced by Erin Costelo, this ambitious work blends soul, R&B, gospel and folk music with powerful collaborations from acclaimed artists including Measha Brueggergosman, Linda Carvery, Gary Beals and Haliey Smith.
Following his Polaris Music Prize long-listed sophomore album Don't Trip, Sampson delivers his most politically relevant and historically conscious songwriting to date on 1783. The album's gripping narratives, exemplified by the haunting single "Gallows" with its bluesy vocals over groaning guitar, transform vintage Black Canadianana into deeply personal and palpable musical storytelling that connects past struggles to present realities.
