Released in 2013 on Village Green, Kourouma marks Angèle David-Guillou's debut album under her own name, drawing inspiration from French mélodie compositions and the flamboyant arrangements of European and Latin American Baroque music. The result is a largely instrumental work built around melodically rich, emotionally compelling grand piano compositions, with a cinematic and orchestral chamber quality that has earned David-Guillou recognition from prestigious fashion houses including Valentino Haute Couture, Burberry, Gucci, and Hugo Boss.
The album is named in tribute to celebrated Ivorian novelist Ahmadou Kourouma, and its dozen compositions are inspired as much by literature — both European and African — as by musical tradition. The haunting title track, a poignant lament drawing on the subject of child soldiers in Africa, stands as a particular highlight, pairing a sombre, lilting piano figure with a strikingly beautiful vocal performance. Mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and manufactured in the UK, this is a deeply thoughtful and emotionally resonant record.
