Drawing from the deep well of jazz history and African American spiritual expression, Dawid adapts the structure of the Roman Catholic requiem mass and pairs it with powerful dialogue extracts from the landmark film "The Cry of Jazz." The result is a genre-defying meditation on joy, suffering, and the enduring spirit of jazz.
This ambitious work premiered at the 2019 Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago, featuring spirited performances from Dawid alongside special guests such as Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Largely recorded live and deeply theatrical in its presentation, Requiem For Jazz weaves together bold vocal passages, beat-driven interludes, and reverent liturgical moments, making it a unique and moving addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection.
