Senegalese artist Amara Touré was part of a vibrant musical era rooted in late-1950s Dakar, where a thriving nightclub scene helped forge a unique sound blending African rhythms with Latin influences. Amara Touré 1973-1980, released by the celebrated reissue label Analog Africa, collects recordings from Touré's time with the Black and White Band as well as his collaborations with Orchestre Massako Touré, capturing a remarkable chapter in West African music history.
The music on this compilation reflects Touré's own belief in the deep connection between African and Latin sounds — a philosophy that comes alive in the fat, resonant brass sections and infectious rhythms found throughout these recordings. Presented in a beautifully crafted silkscreen printed gatefold sleeve with an accompanying silkscreen printed poster, this Analog Africa release is a fitting tribute to an artist whose work deserves to be heard by a wider audience.
